Mason Bates' KC Jukebox Ear/Eye
The intersection of music and imagery will be explored in this multimedia performance, from the beautiful textures of Timo Andres's response to pen-and-ink abstractions to Anna Clyne's industrial response to a film about the creation of the Brooklyn Bridge. A featured work by Marcos Balter pairs startling musical sonorities with Italian design imagery of the 1970s, and the evening also includes Jacob Cooper's moody Ripple the Sky, a piece inspired by the mental illness of Robert Schumann.

Naked Lunch, film with live orchestral accompaniment
David Cronenberg’s 1991 film inspired by William S. Burroughs’s hallucinatory novel owes a lot of its surrealist mood to its famous score—a collaboration between Howard Shore and Ornette Coleman. ASPHALT festival aims to put artists in exceptional open spaces in order to develop and demonstrate their vision. The city of Dusseldorf is the focus of the festival. Urban structures, spaces, and buildings are enlivened by cultural drama and music. In the third year the festival will find ideas in, among others, a former baking factory, an old color works, the top floor of a 24-story tower, and at kiosks around the corner. Due to the temporary revival of unused places spread around different parts of the city, the festival brings culture directly to the citizens directly to the front door.

In this screening and live performance, saxophonists Ravi Coltrane and Henry Threadgill summon Ornette’s spirit in otherworldly riffs and fevered tangents while Ensemble Signal evokes Shore’s shadowy orchestral textures.
